As hair stylists, we’re all about making people look and feel good, and that applies to our My New Hair customers as much as it does to anyone else.
We understand that customers may never have spoken of their fears about hair loss to anyone before, so we let the customer set the pace and tone of the first consultation.
All our My New Hair appointments are held in a purpose-built private studio well away from other customers and staff. In the case of clients about to undergo chemotherapy, we like to meet them before treatment begins in order to explain how and what we can do, and offer advice on the right style of wig to choose.
At this stage we will take photos of the natural hair to record colour and style. If hair loss has already occurred, we ask the customer to bring in a photo of themselves with hair.
We can handle the process of ordering an appropriate wig, or we can advise on what type of wig to ask the NHS for.
Once the hair has been lost, we will fit the wig and cut and style it as desired. Wigs can be a bit rebellious, and we may use a steamer to control the fibres as well as chopping the fibres to remove some bulk. We cut the wig to a style which suits the client, and which they can manage and wash with out hassle.
Through our experience we can suggest things the client may not have thought of. For example: having wigs of different colours and cuts to suit different occasions; or starting the wig off long, and gradually cutting it shorter, so the length matches the client’s real hair – both before hair loss begins, and once it has grown back strongly enough that the wig can be discarded.
As the hair grows back, we will recommend products to treat the hair and scalp, to stimulate blood supply to encourage hair growth, as well as conditioning the new hair, which may be thinner and less robust than established hair.
