Meet the Stylists
Toppers Hair Design was established in 1991 by directors Mitchell Gordon and Lisa Cooper. Two decades on, the duo continue to develop a talented and experienced team of stylists and juniors to meet (and usually surpass) our clients' most demanding expectations.
Qualified to a minimum 'Advanced hairdressing' standard, our stylists are committed to a programme of continuous professional development - attending regular industry standard courses and training events to ensure we remain two steps ahead of the latest cutting, styling and colouring techniques.
Each Toppers Hair Design stylist is committed to helping you in your quest for truly head-turning hair. You can read more about them right here.
Mitchell began hairdressing at the tender age of 13, as a Saturday boy at John Lester's in Downham Market. On leaving school, he completed his City & Guilds qualification, before joining that same salon as a professional stylist.
Quickly developing an enviable reputation for his creativity, his attention to detail, and his unusual ability to listen - to truly understand his clients' wishes - Mitchell and fellow John Lester's stylist Lisa Cooper opened Toppers Hair Design in 1991.
And the rest is history.
Today, Mitchell's enthusiasm for hair cutting and styling remains undiminished.
Through ongoing training and development, he ensures that he, and the salon as a whole, remain 'ahead of the curve': accomplished in the very latest cutting, colouring and styling techniques.
And he continues to work with a loyal base of repeat clients - many of whom have entrusted their hair to his care since Toppers first opened its doors over two decades ago.
For Lisa, hair is more of a passion than a job. So, in addition to 'taking care of business', she continues to specialise in cutting and colouring for a number of new and regular clients, meeting some extraordinary people - and making some great friends - along the way.
Lisa began her career at John Lester's in Downham Market, where she enjoyed three years' intensive training, and a further four years as a highly regarded stylist, before joining her fellow John Lester's stylist Mitchell Gordon as co-director of an all-new Ely based salon in 1991.
Recently celebrating its 21st birthday, the salon, Toppers Hair Design, continues from strength to strength, thanks in no small part to Lisa's business knowledge and her exceptional hairdressing talent.
Like Mitchell, Lisa is adept in all aspects of hairdressing, and provides a complete service for clients preparing for special events such as proms and weddings.
She is committed to ensuring that her fellow Toppers stylists have the best equipment, and use the most professional products, to maintain her own high standards.
Lynn joined toppers in 1993, completing her training at Cambridge Regional College two years later.
Committed to staying right up to date with the latest advances in cutting and styling, she has since completed a raft of further training, including L'Oreal's Colour Keys and Colour Correction courses.
My New Hair certified, she loves all aspects of hairdressing, though her passion is for complete restyles and colour changes. Despite a recent return to work following maternity leave (Lynn is now the proud Mother of twins) her enthusiasm for hairdressing remains undiminished.
Our Kérastase specialist, Michelle has an uncanny ability to quickly and accurately diagnose specific hair problems, and recommend suitable solutions - utilising Kérastase Rituals to tame wilder hair, define curls and add volume and strength.
With a hairdressing career spanning a quarter century (13 1/2 years of which has been spent at Toppers Hair Design) Michelle also has an NVQ Assessors qualification, enabling her to assist Mitchell with the training of the salon's juniors. Committed to continually refreshing and developing her skills, Michelle has successfully completed, amongst many others, the L'Oréal Colour Keys and Guy Kremer Long Hair Up courses.
Mandy attributes her 13 year tenure with Toppers Hair Design to the opportunity the salon offers for her to continually refresh, develop and extend her skills.
Having recently completed the L'Oréal Colour Keys course, she specialises in the science of colour make-up which, she says, "makes you realise how individual we all are". That said, and although her particular passion is for colouring, Mandy is equally adept in the application of Kérastase Rituals, both for problem-solving and pampering. Juggling a loyal client base with a busy family and social life, Mandy is a natural listener - adept at making her clients feel at ease.
A truly versatile all-rounder, Bobbie enjoys cutting, colouring (having recently completed the L'Oréal Colour Keys course) and hair-ups.
Relishing new creative challenges, she loves meeting and working with first-time visitors to the salon. And she is committed to staying on top of 'state of the art' - understanding new trends, perfecting new techniques and finding creative ways to adapt her impressive breadth and depth of hair styling knowledge to the benefit of her clients.
In the four years since she joined Toppers Hair Design, Ellis has established herself as a hair cutter par excellence - combining a caring and attentive style with her proven listening skills to accurately interpret and realise her clients' wishes.
Having successfully completed the L'Oreal Colour Keys course, Ellis has a keen eye for colour too - instinctively understanding what works for a particular client... and diplomatically explaining what really doesn't.
I completed NVQ Level 2 as an apprentice at John Lester's in Downham Market whilst attending Cambridge Regional College once a week.
Currently, I am studying towards a Level 3 hairdressing qualification and learning a lot more technical, adapted methods of cutting, colouring and styling.
I can carry out all services and particularly enjoy ladies and gents cutting and styling.
I strive to achieve every client's desired look to the best of my ability.
I have just finished school. Currently I am working towards my NVQ level 2 qualification in hairdressing.
I especially enjoy creating a whole new look. I first started working at Toppers Hair Design doing work experience which then led to me working on Fridays and Saturdays.
Having joined Toppers in 2009, Libby is now fully qualified to NVQ Level 3, and has a particular interest in colouring.
Joined Toppers in October 2014, she has been hairdressing 15 years and has an NVQ level 3qualification. At Toppers Sam does all aspects of hairdressing, cutand blow dry, colouring, men's, treatments and much more.
Outside of work Sam has a family of 2 and enjoys gym and running, and socialising, moved to Ely in 2013 from Blackpool.
Sam loves colouring hair and says Toppers has a very friendly atmosphere and is always busy as she doesn't like standing around....!
